Collecting ecological data is only the first step to understanding our environment. Algenta Technologies is working with researchers to tag, clean, analyze, annotate, and publish their data using a streamlined and open system. Algenta’s use of semantic web technologies enables a broader scientific understanding for researchers by widening their fields of vision. The semantic web model for publication allows for the conglomeration of metadata and data from various researchers and institutions into a single view. This outlook allows for synthesis of ecological concepts across sites and networks, eliminating the problem of proprietary “data silos”.
As part of these efforts, Algenta has developed one of the first public Life Science Identifier resolution servers for the North Temperate Lakes site of the Long Term Ecological Research Network. A prototype LSID service is publicly available at the University of Wisconsin.
